The ongoing rehabilitation of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha has drawn fresh attention from road safety authorities.
On 17 September 2026, the FRSC Anambra State Command inspected the bridge with other security agencies.
The visit focused on the repair work and traffic situation around the busy bridge.
Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, led the inspection team to the site.
The team also assessed security concerns that could affect motorists during the rehabilitation period.
The inspection came as work continued on the major bridge linking communities across the Niger River.
Asekhauno assured road users that the FRSC would maintain effective traffic control throughout the project.
She also stressed the need for cooperation between the FRSC, Police and other security agencies.
According to the command, the joint effort will help reduce delays and keep traffic moving.
The FRSC said traffic control measures would be introduced whenever necessary during the rehabilitation.
Motorists were urged to remain patient and obey instructions from traffic officers at the bridge.
They were also advised to plan their journeys properly to avoid unnecessary delays.
The command said its priority remains the safety of motorists and other road users.
Meanwhile, residents expressed appreciation for the rehabilitation efforts as work progressed around the Onitsha bridge.
On 22 September 2026, some residents said the massive rehabilitation was ongoing under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
One resident expressed appreciation for what they described as a timely response to the bridge’s condition.
The resident said, “We are appreciative of his proactive measures to give this bridge a new look since this bridge was constructed years back.”
Another resident also praised President Tinubu for his response to the rehabilitation of the Second Niger Bridge.
The resident described the intervention as a welcome development for people using the route.
The FRSC Anambra Command said it would maintain close contact with relevant agencies throughout the work.
