The Nigerian Consulate, working with the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa, has announced evacuation plans.

A free flight is being arranged for those willing to return home permanently.

According to NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu, “The Nigerian Consulate in conjunction with NICASA has offered a free repatriation flight to any Nigerian who wishes to leave South Africa permanently, and the process is ongoing.”

Moreover, many Nigerians have already registered for evacuation as fear deepens. Shops have been closed, and livelihoods have been disrupted.

The unrest has spread across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, and other cities. However, some leaders say the violence is concentrated in certain areas.

Victims have shared disturbing experiences. Yemisi Adewale said, “They are specifically targeting shops owned by Nigerians and Ghanaians. Once your shop is open, they attack, loot your goods, and assault you.”

Another trader added, “We are living in fear. No one dares open their shop anymore.” These voices highlight the emotional toll of the crisis.

Authorities in South Africa have condemned the violence. Investigations have been launched into several incidents. Furthermore, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is engaging with South African officials to ease tensions.
