A tragic incident at a police residential camp in Kogi State has left two officers dead, prompting an investigation into what happened.
The officers, identified as Corporal Amos Yusuf and Corporal Grace Onimisi, died following a shooting incident at ASCO Camp, Ajaokuta, on Friday, October 23.
The tragedy has also left Onimisi’s mother devastated, with the grieving woman crying out over the loss of her daughter.
The Kogi State Police Command said the incident occurred around 9pm at the officers’ residential quarters.
Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat confirmed that an investigation had begun.
Preliminary findings suggest Yusuf had resumed night duty before leaving his post with his service AK-47 rifle.
He allegedly went to Onimisi’s residence and opened fire, leaving her with gunshot wounds to her leg, shoulder and abdomen.
He reportedly used the same rifle to shoot himself afterward.
However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Police received a report at 11:04pm, prompting the Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta to lead officers to the scene.
The command said both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.
Their remains were deposited at the ASCO Hospital mortuary.
“Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains have been deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital. An AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene as exhibits,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have linked the incident to an alleged breakup between the officers.
The reports claim Yusuf struggled to accept Onimisi’s decision to end their relationship.
The police have not confirmed this account, and the motive remains unclear as investigations continue.
Onimisi’s mother, who said she was in Jos when she received the news, expressed deep sorrow over her daughter’s death.
According to the grieving mother, her daughter tried to escape after sensing danger, but Yusuf allegedly pursued her.
Overwhelmed by grief, she cried: “This boy finished me!!!”
However, authorities have yet to release further findings.
