King Charles Criticised Over Nigeria Comment During Tinubu Visit

A surprising wave of criticism has followed King Charles after remarks he made about Nigeria during a high-profile state banquet.  The statement, delivered while hosting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu, has quickly gone viral.

During the royal event at Windsor Castle, the British monarch praised Nigeria’s unity despite its diversity. However, the comment has since been widely debated.

Speaking at the banquet, King Charles said:

“Nigeria has long shown: that people of different faiths can, do, and must live alongside one another, in peace, in harmony and in shared purpose.”

However, the statement was met with swift criticism. Some commentators argued that the message overlooked ongoing challenges in parts of Nigeria. Tim Dieppe, Head of Public Policy at Christian Concern, reacted strongly, saying:

“Does he have no idea of the level of persecution of Christians in Nigeria?”

Moreover, other critics echoed similar concerns. Brit John Bortho wrote:

“Christians are being slaughtered in Nigeria. Ours is a Christian country and always will be. You are Defender of the Faith, Charles. Do your job! We built this country not your muslim chums. We English were made to endure. You can’t erase us.”

Furthermore, commentator David Vance added:

“Christians are slaughtered en masse in Nigeria. King Charles is profoundly misguided.”

Meanwhile, another user, identified as Huckleberry, stated:

“And here we have the King of England willfully ignoring the genocide of Christians in Nigeria.”

In addition, reactions were also seen from Nigerians. Some questioned whether the monarch fully understood the situation he addressed.

One user, Ola Dammy, wrote:

“I’m sure the king is just reading the script given to him without actually knowing the reality of what he is talking about.”

However, others viewed the statement as a diplomatic attempt to promote unity rather than deny existing issues.
