Iran’s foreign minister has sent a bold message to Washington, he says his country is ready for a “doomsday” war.
Abbas Araghchi spoke on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, he also said Iran is still leaving the door open to talks.
This Iran doomsday war warning comes as tension grows between Tehran and Washington. The two countries have been in an on-and-off war since February 28.
The conflict has hit the world hard, oil prices have shot up, pushing gas costs and inflation higher.
“If you ask us, there is no reason why we should go back to diplomacy, but I am still trying diplomacy because I think we shouldn’t miss any chance for peace,” Araghchi said.
He added a firm message about Iran’s readiness. “We are ready to negotiate as much as we are ready to face any challenge … We stand firm in the face of any aggression against us, even if it comes to a doomsday war.”
Last Friday, Araghchi offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, he also proposed resuming nuclear talks within seven days if the US accepts Iran’s conditions.
President Donald Trump rejected the offer, the Wall Street Journal reported he expects to resume bombing Tehran after the November midterm elections.
US Ambassador Michael Waltz also spoke on NBC. He called Iran’s offer a “cynical attempt to put something on the table that they knew was unacceptable.”
He warned that Washington is keeping its options open. “The president will leave all options on the table to ensure the world is safe from Iran holding the world hostage with a nuclear weapon,” Waltz said.
This Iran doomsday war warning came alongside a fresh claim from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. They said they captured a US underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi insisted Iran will not budge on its terms. “Only a negotiated solution can break this deadlock,” he said.
Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, also struck a defiant tone. “The war is not over,” he said.
Oil prices dropped slightly last week. West Texas Intermediate closed at $92.41, while Brent settled at $104.32.
