The NYSC corps members rescued in Imo were among prospective corps members travelling to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom.

They were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, when their buses came under attack on October 1.

The incident happened around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

Security agencies later began a coordinated search for the abducted corps members and their captors.

The Imo State Police Command reportedly located the kidnappers’ camp through drone surveillance.

However, officers could not immediately enter the area because it was reportedly fitted with improvised explosive devices.

Security agencies later brought in more equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers.

The operation eventually led to the rescue of the victims from the forest.

Reports had earlier raised concern after the abductors allegedly demanded ₦50 million for each victim.

Police had also confirmed the rescue of 10 victims while efforts continued to find the others.

The latest operation has now brought relief to families waiting for the remaining victims.

NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu visited the rescued victims at the DSS Clinic.

He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, DSS Director and Brigade Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade.

Meanwhile, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised the security agencies for securing the release.

The governor said he was pleased with their teamwork and commitment to rescuing the corps members safely.

He also praised the Oyo and Imo State governments for working together during the crisis.

Uzodimma explained that officials avoided releasing too much information because the operation involved human lives.

He also thanked the parents for remaining patient during the difficult period.

However, details say the NYSC corps members rescued in Imo are now receiving medical attention as authorities continue to assess their condition.
