A fire outbreak at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Saturday, resulted in significant damage to property, with losses estimated in millions of naira.
The blaze, which began around 5 a.m. in the pediatric consultant’s office due to an electrical spark, affected the Emergency and Accident Unit, destroying equipment, books, engines, and electronic devices.
Additionally, the fire caused considerable damage to the roofs and ceilings in the affected area.
Fortunately, no lives were lost as 16 patients were safely evacuated from the ward.
The hospital’s public relations officer, Omotayo Ogunleye, described the incident as minor and confirmed that normal operations have since resumed.
“Yes, it is true. It is a minor incident. But normal activities have resumed in the hospital,” Ogunleye stated.
This incident highlights the need for proper emergency preparedness, including functional fire safety equipment, to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
