The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are set to meet today to address concerns surrounding the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs.
The meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), is seen as a critical dialogue aimed at finding a resolution.
The labour union, alongside civil society groups, has already planned a protest for Tuesday, February 4, against the tariff increment, which has triggered widespread opposition.
In addition to the telecom tariff hike, the discussion will also cover the N8 billion budget allocation for electricity bill sensitization, which the NLC has strongly criticized as “the height of profligacy, wastefulness, and corruption.”
The planned protest and the labour movement’s dissatisfaction have intensified pressure on the government to reconsider its stance.
According to a source from the SGF’s office, the meeting is intended to serve as “a dialogue on matters of national interest as it affects Nigerian workers.”
The source further disclosed that the session would be an inter-ministerial engagement involving key stakeholders.
Meanwhile, labour leaders have insisted that the telecom tariff adjustment should be reversed to prevent further economic hardship for Nigerians.
With the cost of living already high, the union argues that such an increase would only worsen the financial strain on workers and the general public.
The federal government, however, maintains that the hike is necessary due to rising operational costs in the sector.
“We must ensure that telecom services remain sustainable, but we are open to discussions,” a government official stated.
The outcome of the meeting will determine whether the NLC proceeds with its planned protest or if a compromise will be reached.
However, workers and consumers anxiously await the government’s response, the negotiations will be crucial in shaping future telecom and economic policies in the country.
