EFCC Detains Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in Corruption Probe, Delta APC Backs Investigation

Former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa remains in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Port Harcourt for a second consecutive night as investigations continue into allegations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion in state funds.

The EFCC is scrutinizing Okowa’s handling of substantial public resources, including an alleged unaccounted N40 billion investment in UTM floating LNG shares and reported use of state funds for private ventures.

According to an EFCC source, “the quantum of the allegations and the amounts involved” necessitated his extended detention, highlighting the anti-corruption agency’s intent to enforce accountability among public officials.

The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomed Okowa’s detention, deeming it a “positive step” in Nigeria’s fight against corruption and a clear message that “no one, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law.”

APC State Publicity Secretary Valentine Onojeghuo highlighted Okowa’s alleged financial mismanagement, accusing him of “reckless borrowing” that reportedly left Delta State heavily indebted and with insufficient infrastructure.

This investigation not only reveals the truth behind the economic struggles faced by citizens but also strengthens the principle that those entrusted with public office are held to high standards, marking a critical move toward reducing corruption in Nigeria.
