Cyriel Dessers’ Season Over After Major Injury Setback

Panathinaikos have been dealt with an unexpected setback as Cyriel Dessers has

been ruled out for the rest of the season. The Nigerian striker’s campaign has now been cut short following surgery on a serious thigh injury.

Dessers sustained the injury during the Africa Cup of Nations, just before Nigeria’s final group-stage match. Medical checks later revealed a tendon rupture linked to the rectus femoris in his right leg.

Initially, a non-surgical recovery plan was adopted by the club’s medical team. The goal was to speed up his return without going through surgery.

Moreover, early signs of recovery appeared promising, as the striker progressed steadily through rehabilitation. However, the situation changed when he returned to intense training sessions in March.

Meanwhile, fresh discomfort was reported by the player, raising new concerns about his condition. Further tests were conducted, and incomplete healing was confirmed by specialists.

Therefore, surgery became unavoidable despite earlier optimism around his recovery timeline. The procedure was carried out abroad and has now officially ended hopes of a return this season.

In addition, the club has shifted its focus toward long-term recovery and proper rehabilitation. A structured program has been put in place to ensure full fitness ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, a return to training has been tentatively scheduled for early July. This timeline aligns with preparations for the 2026/2027 campaign.

However, Dessers’ absence comes at a crucial stage for Panathinaikos. The team will now need to adjust without one of their key attacking options.

Before the injury, the striker had begun to show signs of improvement on the pitch. He recorded two goals and one assist in just five league appearances.

Furthermore, his growing influence had added depth to the squad’s attacking play. His absence will now be felt as the club pushes toward the season’s final phase.
