An incident involving a Nigerian citizen in South Africa has sparked concern after a man was allegedly killed during a police operation in Cape Town.
Consequently, community leaders are demanding accountability from the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The victim, identified as Chika Ibe from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, reportedly lost his life on Thursday, July 23, 2026, during an operation at the Parksig Villas Complex in Belleville, Cape Town.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated, while authorities have yet to release an official statement.
According to the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), Mr. Ibe allegedly died after he was subjected to severe beating, torture, inhuman treatment and alleged suffocation during the operation.
However, these allegations have not been independently confirmed by South African authorities at the time of filing this report.
The association strongly condemned the incident, describing it as deeply troubling and deserving of urgent attention from the relevant authorities.
Reacting to the development, NICASA President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, expressed concern over the allegations.
“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” he said.
Furthermore, the association called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the leadership of the South African Police Service to begin an independent and transparent investigation without delay.
According to NICASA, every officer found responsible should face the full weight of the law.
The association stated:
“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life.”
Meanwhile, community leaders appealed to Nigerians living across South Africa to remain peaceful despite the emotional impact of the incident.
They stressed that justice should be pursued through legal means rather than acts of retaliation.
NICASA added:
“While we share the grief and outrage of the Nigerian community, we urge all Nigerians across South Africa to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.”
The association further advised members of the Nigerian community not to engage in any unlawful activities while investigations continue.
According to the statement:
“We strongly discourage any form of retaliation or unlawful conduct and encourage everyone to allow justice to take its course through the appropriate legal channels.”
Moreover, NICASA said it would work closely with the Nigerian High Commission and the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the matter receives proper attention.
The association also pledged to closely monitor every stage of the investigation until justice is achieved.
It said:
“We will closely monitor the investigation and insist on transparency, accountability, and timely prosecution of all those responsible.”
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of Nigerians living abroad, especially in South Africa, where previous cases involving Nigerian citizens have attracted international attention.
Human rights advocates believe an independent investigation is necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident and restore public confidence.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, while both Nigerian and South African authorities are expected to closely follow developments in the case.
