Argentina has announced its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), following in the footsteps of U.S.
President Donald Trump, who initiated America’s exit from the global health body last month. 
The move, led by Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei, has sparked debates over the country’s future in international health policies.
The decision stems from concerns over WHO’s handling of health crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump, whom Milei considers a close ally, previously criticized the WHO’s response, citing mismanagement and unfair financial burdens placed on the United States.
Milei appears to share this sentiment, leading Argentina to reassess its role in the organization.
Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni reinforced this stance, emphasizing that Argentina “will not permit international organizations to interfere with its sovereignty, especially in health matters.”
He further criticized the WHO’s pandemic guidelines, stating they resulted in “the largest shutdown in the history of mankind.”
Critics, however, warn that leaving the WHO could pose significant risks, particularly regarding Argentina’s access to vital medical resources and international health funding.
Meanwhile, proponents believe the decision highlights the need for reform within the WHO, as Trump’s actions have prompted other nations to reevaluate the organization’s influence over domestic health policies.
The withdrawal process is expected to take one year from the official notification date.
During this period, Argentina will continue meeting its financial obligations to the WHO.
However, the long-term implications of this decision remain uncertain.
