More than 80,000 Argentina supporters have signed an online petition demanding that the 2026 FIFA World Cup final be replayed.
The campaign has gained momentum just days after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
The petition, created on Change.org, has spread rapidly on social media. Supporters argue that controversial refereeing decisions had a major impact on the outcome of the final. However, FIFA has not commented on the campaign, and there is no rule that allows a World Cup final to be replayed based on an online petition.
In addition, videos circulating on social media have been cited by supporters as evidence that several key decisions favored Spain.
However, no verified evidence has been presented to support claims that the match was manipulated or improperly officiated.
Despite the lack of official backing, the petition has continued to attract thousands of signatures.
Part of the petition states:
“This is not just a matter of justice for Argentina, but for the future of world football. We need to guarantee the integrity of referees at all levels of the sport. If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we will be setting a bad example for future generations of athletes and fans.”
Furthermore, the petition urges FIFA to conduct a thorough review of the match and consider taking an extraordinary step.
It reads:
“Therefore, we ask FIFA to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final, this time without the influence of a corrupt referee. It is crucial that an impartial and fair referee officiate the match so that the result truly reflects the merit of the teams involved.”
Meanwhile, supporters have continued sharing the petition across social media platforms.
The petition concludes with a final appeal to fans, saying:
“Sign this petition to show that fans will not tolerate corruption in football and that we demand a clean game. Let our voice be heard to safeguard the essence of the world’s most beloved sport!”
However, sports regulations provide no legal basis for replaying a FIFA World Cup final simply because supporters disagree with officiating decisions.
