AGF Confirms IGP Egbetokun’s Tenure Extension as Lawful

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified that the continued stay of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, in office is lawful.

He stated that Egbetokun’s appointment, which took effect on October 31, 2023, would have originally ended upon his attainment of 60 years of age on September 4, 2024.

However, the recent amendment to the Police Act has ensured that the IGP will complete his full four-year term.

In a statement released, Fagbemi emphasized that the amendment to the Police Act in 2024 allows the IGP to remain in office for four years, regardless of retirement age.

“This has, therefore, statutorily extended the tenure of office of Egbetokun to and including 31st day of October, 2027, in order to complete the four-year tenure granted to him,” the AGF explained.

Furthermore, he reiterated that the provision aligns with Section 7(6) of the amended Act, which ensures stability in police leadership.

Meanwhile, concerns regarding the legality of Egbetokun’s continued tenure have now been put to rest.

The AGF assured that the extension is within the framework of the law.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office is in line with the provisions of the Police Act amended in 2024, which allow the occupant of the office to enjoy a term of four years effective from the date of his appointment as IGP, in this case, 31st day of October 2023,” Fagbemi’s statement read.

Therefore, with the legal clarification provided, the issue surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure has been resolved.

His continued leadership until October 31, 2027, is now legally backed, ensuring continuity in the Nigeria Police Force.

The AGF urged the public to take note of the amendment and avoid misconceptions about the IGP’s tenure extension.
