A fresh debate has emerged over Nigeria’s massive road projects; political analyst Obafemi George compared them to America’s famous highway system.

He made this comparison during a recent interview on TVC.  His remarks drew attention to the long-term value of major infrastructure.

This Tinubu highway projects comparison centers on the US Interstate 95, George explained how that single highway transformed American economic activity.

“America has the largest economy and a robust road infrastructure, in the year 1956 the then US President came up with a policy known as the highway act which is aimed at building super highways across the length and breadth of America, horizontal or vertical. The Interstate 95 road cut across from the ocean in Miami, taking you to South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, DC, and New York,” he said.

According to George, this kind of planning took decades to pay off, he believes Nigeria’s current projects could follow a similar long-term path.

Supporters of the Tinubu administration point to two major projects already underway, these include the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway.

Backers say these roads could boost trade and reduce transportation costs significantly.

Proponents argue that nations like the US and China grew through similar investments. They believe consistent road development remains key to Nigeria’s future growth.

This tension has birthed a popular local phrase among skeptics, many now ask, “Na road we go chop?” meaning they doubt roads alone can ease hardship.
