A surprising plan has emerged for one of Nigeria’s most important bridges, the First Niger Bridge will soon carry a special tribute.
Minister of Works David Umahi announced the plan during a site inspection, he said the bridge will feature images of President Bola Tinubu.
This First Niger Bridge decoration plan comes after ongoing repair work on the structure, Umahi shared the update while touring the bridge on Wednesday.
He directed that all current unauthorized adverts be taken down immediately, according to him, that space will instead honor the president’s efforts.
Umahi explained his reasoning clearly during the visit. “Once we are done with work on this bridge, I want all the illegal adverts on this bridge removed. Anyone who wants to advertise should apply to the Ministry of Works. For now, the bridge will be decorated with the pictures of President Tinubu,” he said.
He praised the president’s commitment to infrastructure development, according to Umahi, this gesture reflects appreciation for real progress made.
“The President has worked so hard and we need to reward his hard work by decorating this bridge with his pictures,” he said.
This First Niger Bridge decoration plan also came with a political message, Umahi urged South-East voters to consider infrastructure gains ahead of 2027.
He encouraged residents not to overlook the projects delivered in their region, according to him, votes should reflect the development already seen on ground.
The bridge itself has faced serious challenges in recent times, it was previously shut down after vandals damaged key structural parts.
Reports say bolts, nuts, and expansion joint components were removed illegally, this forced authorities to close the bridge for urgent repairs.
