Big changes are here for Nigerians applying for US visas as the US Embassy in Abuja has stopped handling routine visa applications.
This means applicants must now look elsewhere for help, all routine services have shifted to the Consulate General in Lagos.

The embassy shared the news directly through a public statement. “Routine visa services are only available at Consulate General Lagos. Effective August 1, 2026, U.S. Embassy Abuja no longer processes routine visa applications. All applicants who already have scheduled appointments will be honored; however, those dates may have been rescheduled. Those with appointments in Abuja should check their email for their new appointment date,” the statement read.
This US Embassy Abuja visa change also affects fee usage, officials clarified that unused MRV fee receipts remain valid.
Applicants can use these receipts to book new appointments in Lagos, which gives some flexibility to those already in the process.
