The National Population Commission has been thrown into mourning following the death of its chairman, Aminu Yusuf.
Yusuf died on Friday at the age of 66, just eight months after assuming leadership of the commission.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.
Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State.
He became the substantive eighth chairman of the National Population Commission after his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
The president appointed him in October 2025, before he was sworn into office on December 2, 2025.
Before joining the commission, Yusuf served as special adviser on political affairs to former Niger State Governor Abubakar Bello.
He held the position between 2019 and 2023.
Yusuf also served as chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and represented his constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly.
Between 2005 and 2007, he served as a board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
The late NPC chairman Aminu Yusuf had a long educational and public service background.
He started his education at LEA Primary School in Zungeru before attending Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State.
In 1983, he obtained an NCE from the College of Education, Minna. He later earned a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988.
Yusuf also obtained a postgraduate diploma in public administration in 2001. In 2010, he completed a master’s degree in international affairs and diplomacy at ABU.
