Nigeria’s media and entertainment industry is mourning the reported death of veteran media entrepreneur Sola Olugbemiro.

Olugbemiro, popularly known as “Swollen” and Solkem, reportedly died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Lagos.

His death came just days before the planned 20th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards.

A close associate said Olugbemiro’s health suddenly worsened after he reportedly slumped on Thursday.

“He slumped on Thursday and did not really come out of it. His condition became worse yesterday and he eventually died in the night,” the associate said.

Olugbemiro founded Solkem Entertainment and established the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards.

The awards became a major platform for recognising journalists, broadcasters, entertainers and other media professionals.

For nearly two decades, the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards brought together major figures across Nigeria’s media and entertainment sectors.

The timing of his reported death has added sadness to preparations for the 20th anniversary edition.

Earlier in August, Olugbemiro was still involved in plans for the landmark event.

Veteran journalist Paul Ukpabio had also been announced as media spokesperson for the anniversary celebration.

Olugbemiro’s work went beyond organising awards. He spent years creating opportunities to celebrate professionals shaping Nigeria’s media industry.

His death has therefore left colleagues and friends remembering his passion for recognising talent and professional excellence.

Tributes are expected to continue as the media community comes to terms with the loss.

Details about his funeral arrangements and the future of the NMNA anniversary programme are expected from his family and organisers.
