Just In: Relief as Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers Regain Freedom After Weeks in Captivity

A growing relief in Oyo State after all the schoolchildren and teachers abducted during the May 15 attack on Ahoro-Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area regained their freedom.

The development comes weeks after heavily armed gunmen invaded the community and kidnapped 46 pupils, teachers and the principal of a secondary school.

The abduction took a tragic turn days after the incident when one of the kidnapped teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded by the abductors.

The Presidency also confirmed the development through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Onanuga announced that all the abducted pupils and teachers had regained their freedom and were rescued by the security agencies

He wrote, “Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies.” However, he did not provide details about the operation or the circumstances that led to their release.

However, in a viral video on X, the principal of the school also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their efforts in securing the victims’ release.

In an emotional message, she stated “Hello sir, our father, we are grateful. We understand your commitment to our safety, and we appreciate all you did for us. We could see your hand. Thank you so much. To every security operative, they tried so much, and that is why we are still alive. We are very grateful. Thank you so much,” she said.
