The Lagos State Government has warned residents to prepare for more heavy rainfall and flash floods in the coming weeks, urging people living in flood-prone communities to move to safer locations before conditions worsen.
The warning comes after several days of persistent rainfall left many roads and homes under water across parts of Lagos. Businesses were disrupted, traffic was slowed, and many commuters were stranded as floodwaters spread across major roads.
The latest advisory has raised concerns because more rainfall is expected. However, the government has assured residents that steps are already being taken to reduce the impact of flooding while protecting lives and property.
The Lagos flood warning was issued as government officials inspected the ongoing demolition of illegal structures and shanties blocking sections of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Meanwhile, the demolition exercise was ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to clear illegal developments and commercial activities occupying the road median.
According to the state government, removing these obstructions will improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
The warning followed continuous rainfall that began on Sunday before becoming heavier on Tuesday and extending into Wednesday.
Consequently, several communities experienced flooded streets, while many residents were forced to remove water from their homes.

Speaking during an inspection of the demolition exercise, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the importance of public support.

“Residents must support government efforts to tackle flooding.”
Furthermore, the government advised people living in low-lying communities to relocate temporarily to safer places where necessary.
Officials explained that taking early action could help prevent avoidable loss of lives and damage to property.
