A major tragedy was prevented in Zamfara after police operatives discovered and safely destroyed a suspected explosive device planted along a busy road in Tsafe Local Government Area.
The device was reportedly found before it could be triggered, sparing commuters from what authorities described as a potentially devastating attack. The development has once again highlighted the evolving security threats facing parts of northern Nigeria.
Security officials said the operation was carried out after intelligence received from members of the community pointed to suspicious activities along the Kunchin Kalgo axis.
The IED discovery was made on Friday at about 4:15 p.m. during a coordinated operation involving the Zamfara State Police Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and the Violence Crime Response Unit.
According to the police, credible information suggested that a suspected explosive device had been planted by bandits along the route. Therefore, operatives immediately mobilised to the area to assess the threat and protect road users.
Upon arrival, the security team reportedly identified the device and secured the location. Furthermore, preliminary investigations indicated that the explosive had been strategically positioned to cause maximum damage.
Authorities believe the device was intended to target commuters and other travelers using the road. However, the planned attack was successfully disrupted before any casualties could occur.
The police said the explosive was carefully evacuated from the area and later destroyed through a controlled operation conducted by trained specialists.
As a result, no injuries or damage were recorded during the exercise.
Meanwhile, residents have praised the quick response of security personnel and the vigilance of community members who provided the information that led to the operation.
The Zamfara State Police Command also acknowledged the support received from local residents.
The Command emphasized that public participation remains a key part of ongoing efforts to combat insecurity across the state.
Furthermore, authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for planting the explosive device.

Efforts are also being intensified to track down suspected criminal elements operating within the area.
The Zamfara IED discovery has prompted security agencies to strengthen patrols across vulnerable locations. Consequently, additional monitoring measures have been introduced along major routes and communities considered at risk.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, A.M. Bello, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to sustain pressure on bandits and other criminal groups.
He assured residents that security operations would remain active across the state.
