Iran has finally announced plans for the funeral of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The announcement has drawn global attention because the funeral ceremonies will begin more than four months after his assassination. Moreover, Iranian authorities expect millions of people to participate in one of the largest public mourning events in the country’s history.
According to officials, funeral proceedings for Khamenei will start on July 4 in Tehran. His burial is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the most sacred sites in Shia Islam.
Authorities estimate that as many as 20 million people could participate in events taking place over several days.
Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, during airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Iranian authorities officially confirmed his death on March 1.
Meanwhile, the government has declared a period of national mourning to coincide with the funeral activities. Security arrangements are also being strengthened as preparations continue.
According to information released by officials, funeral processions will move through three major cities. These include Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.
Furthermore, each procession is expected to last at least 24 hours. The arrangement was reportedly made in line with Khamenei’s personal wishes before his death.
The decision to hold ceremonies in multiple cities reflects the significant role he played in Iran’s modern history. For many supporters, the events will serve as a final tribute to a leader who shaped the country’s political and religious direction for nearly four decades.
Khamenei became Iran’s Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He remained in the position for 37 years and was one of the most influential figures in the Middle East.
