Presidency Knocks Peter Obi Over One-Term Presidency Promise

Political tension has emerged after the Presidency publicly dismissed Peter Obi’s renewed promise to spend only one term in office if elected president in 2027.

The reaction followed Obi’s recent interview, where he declared that he would not remain in power beyond four years under any circumstance.

However, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga questioned the credibility of the former Labour Party presidential candidate, insisting that Nigerians should not trust the promise.

Speaking through a post shared on X, Onanuga accused Obi of repeatedly changing political parties and abandoning earlier commitments.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga wrote.

The presidential aide further argued that Obi’s political decisions over the years showed inconsistency.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances,” he added.

Meanwhile, Onanuga recalled Obi’s past relationship with the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

According to him, Obi once publicly vowed never to leave the party that helped him become governor of Anambra State.

“While in APGA, he famously placed himself under a self-curse, vowing never to leave the party that made him governor,” Onanuga said.

“He gave his word to the Ikemba, even on his deathbed, swearing loyalty and fidelity to APGA.”

However, the presidential spokesman noted that Obi later dumped APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He also claimed that the former governor continued moving across political platforms afterward.

“Yet, Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived. He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another ” Onanuga stated.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi had earlier defended his decision to seek only one term if elected president.

During an interview with News Central, Obi said his decision was based on national stability and effective leadership.

“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years… even with a gun in my head,” Obi said.

The statement immediately gained attention across social media platforms and political circles.

In addition, Obi’s recent alliance with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has increased public attention around his political future.

Reports indicate that the party has already zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single term.
