A fresh health scare has sparked concern across Europe after a flight attendant in the Netherlands was hospitalised following contact with a passenger linked to a deadly hantavirus case.
Reports indicated that the passenger travelled on a Johannesburg-linked flight before later dying from complications connected to hantavirus.
Meanwhile, the airline crew member who reportedly came into close contact with the passenger is now under medical observation in the Netherlands.
Health officials are said to be treating the situation as a precautionary case.
According to reports circulating online, authorities insisted the situation remains under control.
“Officials will say it’s ‘precautionary.’ They will say it’s ‘contained.’ We’ve heard that before,” one report stated.
The report further questioned the speed of the response, asking: “How many contacts were made before this was flagged? How far did this travel before anyone knew?”
Although no wider outbreak has been confirmed, the incident has placed health agencies on alert. Furthermore, aviation authorities are expected to review passenger contact records linked to the flight.
Hantavirus is a rare but dangerous disease usually linked to rodents and their droppings. The virus can cause severe breathing problems and, in some cases, death.
Across Europe, the latest development has revived memories of past health crises. Meanwhile, several travellers online demanded more transparency from both airline operators and health authorities.
“One case becomes two. Two becomes a cluster,” the report warned, reflecting growing fears surrounding the incident.
At the time of filing this report, officials had not confirmed whether additional passengers were being monitored.
