Tijani Fatai Appointed as New Lagos Commissioner of Police

A leadership shift has taken place in Lagos State as Tijani Fatai officially assumes duty as the new Commissioner of Police. The development has quickly drawn attention across the state, given Lagos’ critical role in Nigeria’s security landscape.

Fatai succeeds CP Olohundare Jimoh, whose tenure ended on March 26, 2026.

Moreover, the transition comes at a time when public confidence in policing remains a key concern.

The appointment was confirmed in an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos. The statement was signed by Abimbola Adebisi at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

Meanwhile, Fatai becomes the 42nd Commissioner of Police in Lagos State. He takes over from Jimoh, who served as the 41st CP for over a year.

According to the statement, his “track record of leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty underscores his preparedness to steer the affairs of the Lagos State Police Command effectively.”

Fatai brings decades of policing experience into his new role. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

In addition, he has served in several key positions across the country. His roles have included Deputy Commissioner in operations and Assistant Commissioner in finance and administration.

Furthermore, he has worked as Area Commander in different states, including Ogun, Borno, and Lagos.

He also handled sensitive roles such as Officer-in-Charge of the Homicide Section in Lagos. Meanwhile, his experience in mobile police units adds to his field knowledge.

Moreover, he emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies. Community engagement is also expected to be a priority under his leadership.

In addition, he pledged to focus on protecting lives and property using modern policing methods.

The police command has called for continued cooperation from the public. This support is seen as essential for effective policing in a complex urban environment like Lagos.

“The Lagos State Police Command, therefore, solicits the continued support and cooperation of the public as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline, and service delivery,” the statement added.

However, the success of the new leadership will depend largely on execution. Residents expect visible improvements in safety and response time.
