IGP Disu Issues Strong Warning to Newly Promoted Police Chiefs

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a strong warning to newly promoted senior officers, stressing strict accountability and discipline across the Nigeria Police Force.

At the decoration ceremony held on Monday, in Abuja, the IGP made it clear that promotion now comes with heavier responsibility.

Moreover, he cautioned Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police against misconduct, abuse of office, and negligence in duty.

“From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of the Nigeria Police Force,” Disu stated.

He further emphasized leadership by example, noting that actions must reflect integrity and respect for the law.

“You are expected to lead from the front. Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law,” he added.

“You must ensure zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your commands,” he said.

However, the warning did not end there. The IGP also placed full responsibility on the officers for the behavior of those under them. He explained that proper supervision must be maintained at all times.

“You must know what is happening within your commands at all times. Lax supervision breeds misconduct; strong leadership enforces standards,” Disu noted. Furthermore, he added, “I will hold you accountable for both operational outcomes and the behaviour of officers under your authority.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force is said to be shifting towards a more people-focused approach.

He stated that policing must now prioritize human rights, visibility, and responsiveness to the public.

In addition, he stressed that officers should remain approachable and accountable in their daily duties.

“We must build trust deliberately and consistently. Intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and effective law enforcement are all strengthened when the public have confidence in us,” he explained.

The IGP also urged officers to embrace reforms and innovation. Therefore, outdated practices must be removed to improve operational efficiency across commands.

He concluded by reminding the officers that their promotions were earned through merit. However, he clarified that the advancement is not a reward but a duty to serve better.
