IGP Disu Orders Removal of Fakorede, Appoints New Monitoring Unit Head

A major shake-up has quietly taken place inside the Nigeria Police Force after Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, removed Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede from his role as head of the IGP Monitoring Unit.

According to Sahara Reporters, Fakorede has now been replaced by Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar. The change is part of a wider restructuring currently happening at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Meanwhile, the development signals that the new police leadership may be making swift internal adjustments. Several senior officers have reportedly been reassigned as part of the latest administrative changes.

The IGP Disu police reshuffle has therefore drawn attention because Fakorede had only recently been appointed to the position.

Fakorede was appointed in December 2024 by the former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. He was placed in charge of the important IGP Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters.

According to Sahara Reporters, his appointment had previously generated criticism from some civil society organisations.

Concerns were raised about allegations linked to Fakorede’s time as a commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS.

The groups reportedly pointed to accusations involving brutality, extrajudicial killings and alleged election interference during his past role in the unit.

Meanwhile, Fakorede was also linked to a dispute involving investors at River Park Estate in Abuja. According to Sahara Reporters, the monitoring unit under his leadership was accused of confronting journalists and workers during protests at the estate in January 2026.

Furthermore, the report stated that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had publicly criticised Fakorede in September 2025. The criticism reportedly centred on allegations of brutality and claims of election interference.

However, the latest development appears to be part of a broader restructuring within the Nigeria Police Force.

According to an official police wireless message dated March 3, 2026, several postings were approved for senior officers. The communication was circulated from NIGPOL FORSEC Abuja to police formations nationwide.

The message confirmed that Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar has now been posted as head of the Police Mobile Unit or the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit.

Therefore, the recent moves suggest that the police command structure may continue evolving under the current leadership.
