President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and immediately appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as Acting IGP.
The announcement came on Tuesday and marks a sudden shift in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. Moreover, the development follows the submission of Egbetokun’s resignation letter, which cited pressing family considerations.
The Egbetokun resignation and Disu appointment has drawn national attention, especially given the country’s current security challenges.
According to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu received the resignation earlier in the day. The President expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s years of service.
He commended the former police chief for his professionalism and dedication to strengthening internal security. Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 and was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027.

However, his tenure has now ended earlier than planned. The resignation was said to be based on personal and family reasons.
In response, President Tinubu approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu in acting capacity with immediate effect.
The statement noted that the President is confident in Disu’s ability to lead during this critical period.
Meanwhile, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council will be convened soon. The council will formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. Afterward, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency also reiterated its commitment to national security. It stressed the importance of strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring professionalism within the police force.
The Egbetokun resignation and Disu appointment signals a new phase for the Nigeria Police Force.
