Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has strongly condemned the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law. He described the move as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
President Bola Tinubu assented to the amended electoral law on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja. The signing took place barely 24 hours after the National Assembly passed the bill.
The development has triggered heated reactions across political circles. Moreover, the Electoral Act 2026 amendment controversy is already shaping public debate ahead of future elections.
In a strongly worded statement, Sowore accused the president of approving legislation that could damage electoral integrity.
“Tinubu has now signed the 2026 ‘Electoral Act,’ a law designed to undermine and ultimately forbid free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria,” he said.

He further urged citizens to resist what he called an attack on democratic values.
“We must resist this assault on democracy. They have dared the people. Now we must confront them, WE must damn their impunity,” Sowore added.
According to official reports, the bill was signed around 5:00 pm on Wednesday. The ceremony was attended by top leaders of the National Assembly.
Although the full details of the amendments have not yet been released, lawmakers stated that the bill underwent months of review. In addition, consultations and revisions were reportedly conducted before final approval.
However, Sowore’s reaction highlights growing concerns among opposition voices. He believes the changes could affect transparency in upcoming elections.
