Bayelsa to Honour Late Deputy Governor With Tribute Day

Bayelsa State will pause on Wednesday to honour its late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The state government has announced a Day of Tribute as part of his funeral programme.

The event is expected to draw top political leaders and residents.

The tribute will hold at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa. It forms part of a four-day funeral programme. Many residents say the scale of activities has been unexpected.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Day of Tribute follows sporting events held on Tuesday. These activities were organised in Ewhrudjakpo’s honour. They highlighted his strong support for sports development.

The sporting events took place at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa. They featured football, athletics, and traditional games. Civil servants also participated in a tug-of-war contest.

Moreover, traditional wrestling and para-wrestling bouts were staged. The activities attracted large crowds and senior officials.

They were described as a fitting tribute to the late deputy governor.

In the novelty football match, Bayelsa Queens played a goalless draw. They faced a selected Bayelsa State All-Stars team. The match was watched by dignitaries and sports lovers.

Governor Douye Diri performed the ceremonial kick-off. He was accompanied by his wife, Justice Patience Diri. Members of the National Assembly were also present.

Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Chairman of the Funeral Committee, spoke on the events.

He said the activities were organised to honour Ewhrudjakpo’s legacy. Ayawei recalled that Ewhrudjakpo supervised the Ministry of Sports.

He noted that the late deputy governor played a key role in sports growth. Ewhrudjakpo died suddenly on December 11, 2025. He was 60 years old at the time of his death.

Meanwhile, several lawmakers attended the sporting events. They included Senator Benson Agadaga of Bayelsa East. Members of the House of Representatives were also present.

Among them were Chief Fred Agbedi, Mitema Obordor, and Oforji Oboku. Others included Rodney Ambaiowei and Marie Ebikake. The Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly also attended.
