The incident, which happened at the peak of the celebration, has left residents in shock and mourning.

According to eyewitness accounts, a high-intensity firework popularly known as a “knockout” detonated unexpectedly near the main stage of the event.

The blast was sudden and violent, triggering panic among revellers who had gathered to celebrate the festive season.

Within seconds, the cheerful atmosphere was replaced by confusion, screams, and a desperate rush for safety.

One of the victims, identified only as Ugochi, was said to have died instantly at the scene. Another victim was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital; however, she later succumbed to her injuries.

Residents fear the death toll may rise, as several injured persons were said to be in critical condition.

“The knockout exploded like a bomb,” an eyewitness recounted. “Those closest to the stage collapsed immediately. The sound was deafening, and chaos erupted everywhere as people screamed for help.”

Video clips circulating on social media showed thick smoke hovering over the venue, with terrified crowds fleeing in different directions. Injured victims were seen being carried away as others cried out for assistance.

Among those affected was a teenage girl, estimated to be about 14 years old, who reportedly sustained severe injuries to her neck.

In addition, a family member of Ugochi confirmed her death in a voice note shared with journalists.

The relative explained that she had returned to Umuchu for the Christmas holidays and was dancing at the carnival when the explosion occurred. The loss has deepened the grief within the community.

Residents disclosed that children were among the worst hit, with some suffering burns to the face and deep cuts on their bodies.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the fireworks used at the event were packed in cartons and capable of firing multiple explosive rounds, which reportedly worsened the impact of the blast.

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday morning, no official statement had been issued by community leaders or local authorities.

There was also no response from the Anambra State Government or emergency agencies, raising concerns among residents that the tragedy might be overlooked.

Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

However, the incident has renewed attention on the earlier ban on fireworks.

The Anambra State Police Command had prohibited the use of knockout bangers during the festive season.

Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had warned residents in Awka, saying, “As we enter the festive season, the Command has deployed robust security measures to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a peaceful celebration.

We urge the public to adhere to the following safety advisories the use of knockout substances and other social explosives remains prohibited in Anambra.”
