A dramatic twist shocked fans during Chef Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Record attempt to cook the world’s largest pot of jollof rice, when the massive cooking pot suddenly collapsed while being lifted for weighing.
The unexpected incident occurred late Friday night in Lagos after a full day of intense cooking and celebration.
Once the jollof rice was ready, organizers brought in a crane to raise the gigantic 22,619-litre pot onto a scale.
However, the smooth flow of the event turned chaotic when the pot gave way under its own weight, collapsing midway.
Supporters who had gathered to witness history screamed in panic as the crane operator was quickly ordered to halt the lift to avoid further damage or injury.
A circulating video of the collapse has since gone viral on social media, showing the tense moment the pot crumbled.
The footage does not confirm whether weighing was eventually completed, leaving uncertainty about whether Guinness World Records will certify the attempt.
The collapse has sparked mixed reactions online.
One user, charles_maney, wrote: “So after all the hype, the pot no survive? Record don break before e even enter Guinness 🤣.” Another, IamMrBrain, added: “Wow she finally broke the record.”
Earlier in the day, Baci’s record-breaking journey had drawn excitement, with many praising her determination and the cultural pride attached to the challenge.
Using 250 bags of rice and a specially built pot large enough to feed 10,000 people, the chef had dedicated the effort not only to record-breaking but also to sharing food with attendees and donating to charity.
However, the collapse now raises questions about whether the attempt will still be validated.
Guinness officials require an official weighing to confirm that the pot meets record-breaking standards, and this setback could delay or even derail certification.
Despite the mishap, many fans remain optimistic that Baci’s attempt will still be recognized.
The moment her mother prayed for her before cooking began has also resurfaced online, with many describing it as symbolic of her resilience and determination.
