Bimbo Akintola Laments Nollywood’s Shift: “It’s Now About Looks, Not Passion”

Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has sparked conversation after openly criticising the current state of the Nigerian movie industry.

She expressed deep concern that Nollywood, once powered by passion and authentic storytelling, has now shifted its focus toward glamour and appearances.

Speaking during an interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Akintola revealed that the drive that once pushed actors to work tirelessly has been replaced by superficial concerns about beauty, makeup, and body enhancement surgeries.

According to her, Nollywood is losing touch with the hunger for art and storytelling that built its foundation.

Reflecting on her early years in the industry, Akintola recalled working alongside legends like Sola Sobowale and Joke Silva.

She explained that during that era, actors were motivated by pure dedication, often working overnight without pay or comfort.

“Now, people are saying, ‘My makeup isn’t right for this, and I can’t wear this.’ Is that what the film is about?” she asked, lamenting the change.

She added, “We are more concerned about our outfits and how we look. This is why, generally, there is a spark in BBL. It is now about looks and not content or what one has. Looks will fade no matter what you do.”

Her comments highlight a growing debate in Nollywood about authenticity versus image.

Moreover, the actress pointed out that the industry is now flooded with actors who prioritise glamour over skill, a trend she believes could undermine Nollywood’s long-term growth.

In addition, Akintola emphasised that film should remain about content and creativity, not about maintaining an outward image.

For her, the obsession with fashion and physical appearance does not reflect the true essence of acting.

Furthermore, Akintola’s reflections serve as a reminder of Nollywood’s humble beginnings.

She noted that storytelling, not celebrity glamour, made Nollywood resonate with audiences across Africa and beyond.
