Nigerian Army reports a minor explosion at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, assuring no casualties as fire is swiftly contained.Residents of Ilese, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were jolted on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025, after a sudden explosion occurred inside the Ilese Barracks.
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the incident, assuring the public that it was swiftly brought under control and caused no loss of life.
The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed in a statement that the explosion happened inside one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
“Specifically, in the early hours of today, 14 August 2025, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage buildings… leading to a limited fire outbreak,” she explained.
According to the Army, prompt intervention by troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, prevented the fire from spreading beyond the affected building.
“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials,” Anele added.

The Army further confirmed that a detailed assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss.
Lt. Col. Anele urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm and continue with their normal activities, stressing that security and safety remain top priorities.
“The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with relevant agencies, has commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence,” she said.
The incident, though unexpected, has raised public interest due to the sensitive nature of military installations and past security concerns in the region.
Military authorities have assured that findings from the investigation will guide stronger preventive measures.
While minor explosions at military facilities are rare, experts note that strict safety protocols are usually in place to handle stored materials.
The Army also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting not just its personnel but also residents of neighbouring communities, emphasizing that security cooperation between the Army and civilians is essential.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as the members of neighbouring communities,” the statement concluded.
