Sanwo-Olu Applauds Smooth LG Election, Urges Voters to Strengthen Democracy

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has praised the ongoing local government elections across the state, describing the process as largely smooth and encouraging.

He made the remarks after casting his vote at polling unit 006, Ward E3, Oke-Popo in Lagos Island East LCDA.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who voted alongside his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, commended the presence of officials and party agents at the polling centres.

He also urged Lagosians to come out and participate actively in choosing their local leaders, which he described as a crucial part of governance.

According to the Lagos State Governor, “As you can see, everything is okay here… Voting is going on well. The officers are on ground and we have conducted our civic exercise very well.”

While acknowledging that some areas experienced delays due to logistical issues, the Governor was optimistic, saying, “Maybe there are one or two logistics in one or two places, but I think they have also resolved them.

You know how typical it is, early morning vehicular movements and buses could not come on time.”

He explained that the materials were intact and that ad-hoc staff were mobilised early enough, stressing that the process was not hampered by a shortage of resources.

“It’s not that there were shortages of materials or anything,” he noted.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the process was free and fair, reflecting the true spirit of democracy.

“Local government is an important arm of government,” he stated.

“They are independent, and as you can see, a lot of them have projects and deliverables. They are competing among themselves, and we are excited about that.”

As the Lagos local government elections continue in the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains hopeful for improved participation and a stronger democracy at the grassroots.
