Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has made headlines after firmly rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestion that Canada should become America’s 51st state.
This happened during a tense but diplomatic meeting held at the White House on Tuesday, May 6.
Although the meeting remained respectful, it was marked by strong differences in vision between the two leaders.

Trump, known for his unconventional ideas, once again floated the suggestion of uniting Canada with the United States.
“It takes two to tango, right? We’re not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it,” Trump said, hinting that the idea remains open for discussion.
However, Carney stood his ground. He shut down the suggestion swiftly and clearly.
“There are some places that are never for sale,” he stated, comparing the proposal to selling off respected landmarks like the White House or Buckingham Palace.
Meanwhile, Trump attempted to frame the union as something positive. Referring to it as a “wonderful marriage,” he insisted that the idea was still on the table.
However, Carney’s immediate response made it clear that Canada would not entertain such a notion.
Trump praised Canada’s increased contributions to international defense efforts,
However, he finished with a familiar hint of persistence: “I say, never say never.”
