The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Workers’ Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The declaration comes at a time when the contribution of Nigerian workers remains crucial to national development.
Despite tough economic conditions, many citizens continue to show unwavering dedication to their duties.
The federal government has, therefore, taken this moment to appreciate their efforts.
According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, “There is dignity in labour; the dedication and commitment to the work we do, is vital to nation-building.”
He emphasized that Nigerian workers deserve recognition for their role in sustaining governance and development.
The Minister further acknowledged the sacrifices made by workers across different sectors.
He described their input as the driving force behind the country’s progress and reputation in the international community.

“Workers’ efforts are largely responsible for the greatness of the country and the respect Nigeria commands in the comity of nations,” the statement read.
Workers’ Day in Nigeria has always served as a reminder of the strength and value of labour.
It is also a day to reflect on how best to improve working conditions and encourage a culture of innovation.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo used the opportunity to urge Nigerian workers to strive for greater productivity and to adopt fresh thinking in their various roles.
“We urge workers to imbibe the culture of innovation and productivity,” he said.
Moreover, he called for a renewed focus on raising the standards of service across the country.
“Raise the bar of your trade to drive and upgrade the bar of governance,” he added.
He also reiterated the administration’s ongoing commitment to safety and economic stability.
“This Administration is fully committed to the security of life and property of every citizen and foreigners in the country,” he assured.
The Minister encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, especially under the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
He expressed optimism that the Renewed Hope Agenda will deliver positive change for all.
This year’s Workers’ Day not only offers time to rest but also stands as a powerful recognition of the Nigerian workforce.
