A tragic incident has occurred at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), where a 200-level male student reportedly took his own life due to severe financial struggles.
The deceased, a Mass Communication student with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 4.5, was said to have consumed a poisonous substance in his private residence at Oke-Odo, Tanke, Ilorin.
His financial struggles, worsened by the current economic situation, had reportedly begun after he resumed school last year, leading his colleagues to raise funds to support him.
Unfortunately, despite these efforts, he was unable to cope and left a note stating financial hardship as the reason for his actions.
The deceased had reportedly lost his father a few years ago, leaving his retired mother to bear the burden of his education.
With the rising cost of living, including tuition fees and food prices, many students now face similar hardships.
A source within the university community noted, “His financial crisis reportedly started when he resumed school last year,” highlighting the struggles that students endure.
Moreover, the rising inflation rate and economic instability have made it increasingly difficult for families to support their children’s education.
Many students rely on scholarships, part-time jobs, or assistance from friends to survive.
Unfortunately, these measures are often not enough.
The incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities to address the financial burdens placed on students.
“His colleagues raised some funds to pay his tuition fees and buy foodstuffs for him,” yet the support was not enough to ease his struggles.
This heartbreaking case reflects the urgent need for government intervention in the education sector.
The rising cost of tuition, coupled with economic hardship, continues to push students to their limits.
