Ogun Monarch Interrogated, Suspended for Assaulting Elderly Chief

The Ogun State Police Command has interrogated the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, following a viral video showing him assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Areola Abraham.

The incident, which sparked widespread outrage, led to the Ogun State Government imposing a six-month suspension on the monarch for his misconduct.

In the viral clip, Areola was seen kneeling on the road while the monarch verbally abused him and accused him of conspiracy.

A man accompanying the king also slapped the elderly chief and ordered him to prostrate.

The monarch, reportedly a retired police officer, boasted of his influence over law enforcement agencies and threatened to jail Areola.

Reacting to the public outcry, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the police had invited and interrogated the monarch.

He emphasized, “The matter is being looked into for justice to prevail. Nobody can claim to be controlling the NPF. Justice must be served by all means.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council, took swift action by suspending Oba Ogunjobi from his royal duties.

A statement from the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Communication and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that the decision was made after both the monarch and his victim were interrogated.

“After the investigation conducted on the matter, the Kabiyesi has been suspended and stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile-Ifo pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise on the allegation,”the statement read.

The suspension was executed under Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021, reinforcing the government’s stance against abuse of power.

Various stakeholders, including the National Association of Nigerian Students and public commentators, have applauded the swift response, emphasizing that leaders must be held accountable for their actions.
