Beandri Booysen, a 19-year-old South African TikTok star and the country’s last known individual living with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, passed away on Wednesday, December 18.
Her family announced the heartbreaking news on social media, praising her as an inspiring young woman who used her platform to raise awareness for the rare genetic condition.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Beandri Booysen, one of South Africa’s most beloved and inspiring young women,” the family wrote on Facebook.
She is known for her motivational posts and infectious laugh; Booysen’s message of hope reached thousands worldwide.
“Beandri radiated hope and joy in the face of her health challenges and used her unique spirit to inspire thousands of people worldwide,” her family added, requesting privacy as they plan a memorial service.
Progeria, which causes children to age rapidly, has an average life expectancy of 15 years.
In spite of the challenges posed by the condition, Booysen defied the odds with her optimism and courage.
Tributes flooded TikTok as fans celebrated her vibrant personality and advocacy for others living with rare conditions.
While The Mayo Clinic notes there is no cure for progeria, they highlight promising research aimed at managing symptoms and complications.
Beandri’s legacy continues to inspire others to find strength and positivity in adversity.
