The National Population Commission (NPC) has dismissed reports alleging that its chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced 2025 as the date for Nigeria’s next population and housing census.
In a statement released by the acting director of public affairs, Erelu Taibat Yemi Oloruntoba, the commission clarified that no official date has been determined.
The statement also noted that the chairman’s comments during the International Conference on Population and Development in Abuja were misinterpreted, emphasizing that the authority to announce a census date rests solely with President Bola Tinubu.
The NPC highlighted that discussions with the presidency are ongoing to finalize a new timeline for the long-delayed census, which was postponed twice under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Despite the UN’s recommendation for decennial censuses, Nigeria has not conducted one since 2006, leading to an 18-year gap in reliable demographic data.
The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, urging patience and stressing the importance of proper planning to ensure accurate results.
