Nigerian rapper Phyno has commended today’s parents for being more supportive of their children’s talents, contrasting this with the experiences of previous generations.

During an interview on the In My Opinion Podcast, the award-winning artist shared that his parents were initially unsupportive of his musical aspirations.

“My parents didn’t support my career when I first started. It’s different now,” he said.

He highlighted the evolution in parenting attitudes, noting that the current generation understands the importance of nurturing a child’s gifts, whether in music, sports, or other creative endeavors.

Phyno contrasted the two eras, recalling how children in the past were often punished for pursuing their passions.

“Then, when parents come home and see you playing ball, they beat you and seize the ball and give you punishment,” he explained.

He praised the shift in mindset, observing how modern parents now actively encourage their children, sometimes enrolling them in academies or supporting their dreams early.

“Now, any father who sees his son can play ball and enrolls him in an academy. Some, at 1 year old, already buy you a ball and say you must play ball like Neymar,” he noted.

The rapper also acknowledged how the perception of creative careers has evolved.

“The money in music now was never in music then. They also look at people who did music back then as useless people,” Phyno said, recognizing that societal changes have played a role in this transformation.

He applauded today’s parents for seeing talent as a gift and urged them to continue supporting their children’s dreams for a brighter future.

This generational shift, he emphasized, is pivotal in helping children achieve their full potential while sharing their unique gifts with the world.
