YABATECH Student Shot Dead in Suspected Cult Clash After Exams

A tragic incident occurred at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, when a yet-to-be-identified student was shot dead in a suspected cult-related attack.

According to Punch, the student had just finished writing his exam for the day and was walking towards the back gate of the institution when he was attacked.

The shooting, which happened in broad daylight, left many students terrified.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen approached the victim, pulled out a gun, and fired at close range.

The entire attack was carried out within seconds, and students nearby were seen running in different directions in fear for their lives.

“The student had just finished writing his exams and was heading towards the back gate when some boys approached him and shot him twice on the spot. The whole scenario happened very fast,” a student told Punch.

Another source, who chose not to be named, claimed the attackers retrieved a weapon from the victim’s belongings.

“The incident looked more like a cult attack because the victim seemed to have been armed before he was killed. We learnt immediately the boys shot him, they searched his bag and recovered a gun and a bullet. They also made sure he was dead before they left,” the student said.

The attack has been linked to ongoing rivalry among cult groups on the campus.

According to a source in the institution, this might have been a revenge killing connected to an earlier shooting.

“The killing was in retaliation for a shooting that occurred last week. One suspected cult member was shot but he survived. So this looks more like a payback,” the source shared.

This heartbreaking loss comes at a time when many students are focused on completing their academic responsibilities.

For a young person to lose his life after finishing an exam points to a deeper concern about campus safety and the growing threat of cult-related violence in Nigerian higher institutions.

Meanwhile, school authorities are yet to release an official statement on the matter, and there is increasing concern among students and parents about security within the campus.

However, beyond security efforts, there is a need for serious awareness campaigns that focus on the importance of choosing peace, discipline, and focus over violence and gang affiliations.
