Trump Says Ukraine Is Holding Up Peace Deal as War Drags On

Trump-Zelenskyy

U.S. President Donald Trump has made a  claim about the Ukraine war. He said Ukraine, not Russia, is delaying a possible peace agreement.

The remark came during an exclusive interview inside the Oval Office. Trump told Reuters that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end the war.

According to Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is less willing to move forward. The statement sharply contrasts with views held by many European allies.

Those allies argue that Moscow has shown little real interest in ending the conflict.

However, Trump said his assessment is based on recent diplomatic efforts.

“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump said of Putin. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”

When asked why talks have not ended the fighting, Trump gave a blunt response.

“Zelenskiy,” he said.

The comments highlight renewed frustration with the Ukrainian leader. Moreover, they reveal lingering tension in Trump’s relationship with Zelenskiy.

Although ties improved during Trump’s return to office, mistrust appears unresolved.

At various times, Trump has taken Putin’s assurances more seriously than allies prefer.

That approach has unsettled Kyiv and several European capitals. Furthermore, it has raised concerns among U.S. lawmakers from both parties.

Meanwhile, U.S. led Ukraine peace talks have continued behind the scenes.

Negotiations are being led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Ukrainian officials have participated in several rounds of discussions. However, some European officials remain deeply sceptical.

They question whether Putin would accept key terms under discussion. Those talks involve Washington, Kyiv, and several European governments.

Trump said he was unaware of any planned visit to Moscow by U.S. envoys.

This followed earlier reports suggesting such a trip was being considered.

Asked about meeting Zelenskiy in Davos, Trump offered a conditional response.

He said he would meet the Ukrainian leader if he attends the forum.

However, no final plans have been confirmed.

Trump also declined to explain why he believes Zelenskiy is hesitant.

“I just think he’s, you know, having a hard time getting there,” he said. The statement added to speculation around Ukraine peace talks.

In addition, negotiations have focused on post-war security guarantees. These measures aim to prevent another Russian invasion in the future.

U.S. negotiators have also pushed a controversial proposal. Ukraine would be asked to give up its eastern Donbas region.

Therefore, the talks remain sensitive and highly complex. As the war nears four years, pressure is growing on all sides.
