Traders and residents of Awo-Idemili in Imo State were thrown into panic on Tuesday, June 23, 2025, when a bomb explosion shattered the usual bustle of the Eke Ubaheze Market.
The blast, which occurred at around 2:40 PM, claimed the life of one woman and left five others severely injured.
The victim, identified as Mrs. Ngozi Umeh, was a resident of Ubaheze village.
According to the police, she stepped on a planted landmine while shopping in the market, leading to a tragic injury that later claimed her life in the hospital.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion occurred when Ngozi Umeh, a middle-aged woman from Ubaheze village, stepped on a landmine suspected to have been planted by IPOB/ESN terrorists,” said Henry Okoye, spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command.
The disturbing event took place during regular trading hours.
Eyewitnesses say the blast created a chaotic scene as people fled for safety, with some helping victims to nearby clinics.
Meanwhile, five other victims of the blast are receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital.
Their conditions have not been officially disclosed.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, responded swiftly by deploying tactical teams and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, the Commissioner of Police swiftly deployed operatives… to cordon off the area, evacuate victims, and sweep the market vicinity for any other planted IEDs,” Okoye added.
He confirmed that the area has since been cleared and declared safe, with trading activities gradually returning under tight security measures.
This latest attack highlights the growing insecurity in Imo State, particularly in Orsu Local Government Area.
Authorities believe the explosion was the work of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
In addition, CP Danjuma extended condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed hope for the quick recovery of the injured victims.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to restoring peace in the region, stating that “all criminals threatening the peace of Orsu and Imo State must be weeded out.”

The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or objects.
Concerned citizens are encouraged to call the command’s emergency number: 08034773600.
Furthermore, a directive has been issued for the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to launch a full investigation into the incident.
Authorities are determined to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
