Tinubu, Shettima to Spend ₦12.2bn on Travel in 2026 Budget

 

 

President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are projected to spend ₦12.2 billion on foreign and local travels in the 2026 fiscal year.

The figure has drawn attention because it comes amid ongoing fiscal reforms and calls for reduced government spending.

Details from the State House budget estimates in the 2026 Appropriation Bill show that travel remains a major cost. However, international trips account for the larger share of the allocation.

According to the document before the National Assembly, ₦7.014 billion was set aside for President Tinubu’s travel and transport. This includes ₦6.14 billion for “international travel and related logistics” and ₦873.89 million for local movement.

The Vice President was allocated ₦1.732 billion for travel during the year. Out of this amount, ₦1.31 billion was earmarked for international trips, while ₦417.49 million covers local travel.

In addition, ₦3.433 billion was provided under the State House Headquarters for travel and transport purposes. Therefore, the combined figure for travel across the Presidency stands at ₦12.2 billion.

Beyond travel, other costs linked to the President’s office were also outlined. The budget allocated ₦179.01 million for the purchase of motor vehicles. Moreover, ₦375.19 million was set aside for food and catering supplies.

Drugs and medical supplies received ₦79.68 million, while refreshment and meals were allocated ₦56.43 million. Overall, the President’s total allocation stood at ₦8.39 billion, with capital expenditure accounting for ₦777.19 million.

For the Vice President, additional provisions were made for daily operations. These include ₦171.03 million for food and catering, ₦14.99 million for refreshments, and ₦21.8 million for honorarium and sitting allowances. Furthermore, ₦28 million was allocated for welfare packages, while ₦11.83 million was set aside for publicity and advertisement.

In total, the Vice President’s budget stood at ₦2.64 billion, with capital spending estimated at ₦641.39 million. Meanwhile, the State House Headquarters received a broader allocation of ₦43.20 billion for 2026.

A breakdown shows ₦11.23 billion for motor vehicles, ₦7 billion for solar power at the Villa, and ₦2.42 billion for wildlife conservation. In addition, ₦8.48 billion was allocated for office building repairs.
