Besiktas manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, describing him as a “leader” after an impressive debut for the Turkish giants.
Ndidi featured in Besiktas’ 2-1 Süper Lig win over Eyüpspor, where his composure and defensive strength earned him a standing ovation from fans in Istanbul.
He played 70 minutes before being substituted for youngster Demir Ege Tiknaz, leaving the pitch to loud applause.
Speaking ahead of Besiktas’ upcoming UEFA Europa Conference League clash with Swiss side Lausanne, Solskjaer expressed his delight at the club’s decision to secure the Super Eagles star.
“Wilfred is a very professional player and a good person. He’s capable of filling important gaps in our team. He’s a leader,” Solskjaer said.
“I’m delighted we signed him. I know he’ll contribute greatly in the coming months and years.”

The praise highlights the high expectations for Ndidi, who joined Besiktas after an eight-year spell with Leicester City in the English Premier League.
CAt Leicester, he established himself as one of Europe’s top defensive midfielders and played a vital role in the club’s biggest successes.
Ndidi helped Leicester secure their first-ever FA Cup title in the 2020/2021 season, following a historic 1-0 win over Chelsea.
He was also part of the squad that lifted the Community Shield after another 1-0 victory, this time against Manchester City.
Moreover, his consistency and leadership qualities at Leicester made him a fan favorite, while his performances for Nigeria’s Super Eagles have solidified his reputation as a key international player.
Besiktas, who are pushing to re-establish themselves as a dominant force in Turkish football, see Ndidi’s arrival as a major boost.
His ability to break up attacks, protect the defense, and control midfield battles is expected to add balance to Solskjaer’s team.
Meanwhile, with the UEFA Europa Conference League campaign around the corner, Ndidi’s leadership and experience will be vital.
