Power Shift in Agege: Obasa’s Son Confirmed as New LG Chairman

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been confirmed as the new Chairman of Agege Local Government.

His confirmation followed the resignation of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to health challenges.

The development was announced on Wednesday during a council session, where lawmakers unanimously voted in favour of Abdul-Ganiyu’s appointment.

His confirmation, according to insiders, solidifies his growing influence in Agege’s local political landscape.

Azeez, who had been absent from public duties for months, formally resigned in a letter read by the Leader of the House, Adeshina Haruna.

The letter stated that he was stepping down to focus on his health after prolonged medical complications.

“Due to persistent health challenges, I am unable to continue in office,” Azeez noted in the letter.

His resignation, therefore, paved the way for Abdul-Ganiyu’s elevation from Acting Chairman to substantive head of the council.

Abdul-Ganiyu had served in an acting capacity since July 27, 2025, when Azeez proceeded on medical leave.

During that period, he reportedly led several grassroots development initiatives and coordinated council mobilization efforts.

Lawmakers justified their unanimous vote, citing Abdul-Ganiyu’s “credibility, leadership capacity, and commitment to community service.”

In their words, “His appointment is a testament to his experience and the council’s resolve to ensure governance remains uninterrupted and responsive to the needs of the people.”

Moreover, they expressed appreciation to Azeez for his contributions to local governance and wished him a speedy recovery.

“We commend the outgoing chairman for his years of service to the people of Agege and pray for his full recovery,” the council members added.

He had earlier shown interest in contesting for the chairmanship during the 2025 local government elections but was dropped following internal party disagreements.

Furthermore, the council’s leadership emphasized that the transition was in the best interest of Agege residents.

“We cannot allow a leadership vacuum at a time when the council is embarking on major infrastructural projects,” one official remarked.

Meanwhile, Abdul-Ganiyu is expected to officially assume office this week and begin consultations on his short-term governance agenda.
