A video showing jars and sachets of plantain chips branded with President Bola Tinubu’s image and a bold campaign slogan for 2027 has sparked criticism across social media.
The packaging, which reads “Door 2 Door, Jagaban for 2027,” has stirred disbelief among Nigerians who found the move unexpected and disappointing.
The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @ChuksEricE. In the clip, the plantain chips are seen with labels carrying Tinubu’s photo alongside the suggestive campaign message.
The development has drawn wide attention, especially as the next general election is still two years away.
In the video, a man believed to be the owner of the chips business is heard distancing himself from any political motive.
He explained that he was simply contracted to do the branding job.
“I am not campaigning for the President,” the man stated clearly. “I only took on the branding job as a contractor.”
However, the footage has triggered outrage from Nigerians who feel the country’s leadership should focus more on addressing pressing economic issues rather than stirring early political moves.
One user, @VayPor116, asked, “Is it not a shame that a sitting president is campaigning more than other candidate?” This sentiment was echoed by others who accused the leadership of exploiting citizens’ current struggles.
Another user, @felixherbt, warned, “If you allow yourself to be deceived again this time with plantain chips, you may not live to see the end of what you voted. Don’t play the fool again this time.”
For many, the idea of plantain chips being used as a political tool has highlighted just how deep the hunger and hardship in the country have become.
One commenter, @DonyiboOyibo, remarked,“Chia they want to take advantage of the hunger in the land.”
Moreover, others pointed out that it was a clever but worrying strategy aimed at influencing the masses through basic food items. “😂😂😂 eat plantain chips now and suffer for the next 4years. Good idea?”@JE_Nuel_U quipped.
While there has been no official confirmation that the President or his campaign team authorized the branding, the message on the chips has left many Nigerians questioning the motive behind it.
However is worth noting that under Nigeria’s electoral laws, campaigns for the 2027 election have not officially begun.
